C Cengage, an online course material company has announced the introduction of Cengage Unlimited for Institutions. This new service will provide students with access to over 10,000 digital textbooks and study tools, as well as access to the company's online learning platforms. The Cengage service is available in the UK, Middle East and North Africa.
According to Eoin Langan, Head of the College of Commerce at Technological University Dublin, one of the test institutions, “The programme has given an affordable alternative to the purchase of textbooks."
According to a source from Cengage, the Covid epidemic caused several students trouble getting into university libraries. Through the Cengage Unlimited service, they aim to close this gap and offer students access to online learning content.
…affordable and accessible course materials can make the difference between a student dropping out or completing their degree, and there is a growing need to provide fair and equitable access to educational content for all…
A notable feature of the new service is that universities can now subscribe on behalf of their students. This move potentially lowers the number of textbooks that students must buy. Cengage Unlimited features a skills development and career service section, that the firm claims will assist students in adjusting to university life and developing their employability abilities.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Robinson who is a big figure at Cengage said, “Affordable and accessible course materials can make the difference between a student dropping out or completing their degree, and there is a growing need to provide fair and equitable access to educational content for all.”
A poll by higher education thinktank HEPI revealed that 38% of overseas students in the UK considered their courses to be bad value for money, with cost of living being the top concern for these students. Through the launch of the new online service, Cengage hopes to improve some parts of student experience in the UK.
