Education in Canada: $80m Canadian Scholarship Announced by Trudeau Government
J Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, has announced a new $80 million scholarship programme for people in developing nations that will be funded over the course of eight years.
According to Universities Canada, the new Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030 program's aim is to "educate, train, and empower" thousands of students from over 24 developing nations.
…we’re also focused on growing our relationships with commonwealth countries, including Rwanda, to create good jobs and growth for the middle class that benefit everyone, while we continue fighting climate change together…
The programme, which is funded by a $500 million package for "important matters" including gender equality, food security, and climate change, was launched in Rwanda at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
The program will focus on offering chances for high-quality education and training that address inequality, help to improve people's lives and communities, and is sponsored by Global Affairs Canada.
It is "essential time," according to Prime Minister Trudeau, for nations to unite in support of Ukraine while also tackling the global effects of Russia's illegitimate invasion, such as food security and affordability. He further added, “We’re also focused on growing our relationships with Commonwealth countries, including Rwanda, to create good jobs and growth for the middle class that benefit everyone, while we continue fighting climate change together.”
Through a collaboration with the West African Economic and Monetary Union, Colleges and Institutes Canada and Universities Canada are managing the scholarship. The training and guidance will primarily centre on areas emphasised by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, like STEM, climate change.
