Engineering College in Kargil: A Possibility Now

R Recent visit by a team of IIT Directors to Kargil presents a possibility of establishing an engineering college in Kargil, Ladakh. The visit was made to assess the students’ interest, and to check the feasibility for establishment of an engineering college in Kargil.

An interaction with officials and many students from the Union Territory of Ladakh studying in various IITs in India shed some light on the challenges faced by students hailing from these remote areas. The interaction brought out the issues faced by the students in terms of lack of exposure and job opportunities.

The visiting team comprised directors IIT-Delhi Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, IIT-Bombay Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri and IIT-Kanpur Prof. Abhay Karandikar. The possibility of fellowship opportunities for the students of the Union Territory studying in various IITs in the country was also discussed. Keeping the students’ interest in mind, the prospects of opening up different branches of engineering in the Union Territory, career prospects, annual fellowship programmes, incubation and innovation programmes, and internships were discussed at length.

The meeting’s focus was to explore innovation and entrepreneurship avenues and to focus on the development of skills, improving the quality of education, and more opportunities for the students in terms of employment. The team also met with the heads of Government Degree College, Kargil, Government Polytechnic College, Kargil and Kargil’s chief education officer to assess the various courses these colleges and schools were offering. At present, there are 22 government and 2 private higher secondary schools in the district which make up 32,000 students studying in various schools, out of which there are 3000 students pursuing science stream. Based on the outcome of the visit and the meetings with the stakeholders, an ‘Expression of Interest’ will be signed between the Consortium of IITs and the Department of Higher Education, Ladakh, in presence of the Lt. Governor of Ladakh.
