Good News for International Students: Australia Extends Post-Study Visa Authorization
I In an effort to address Australia's labour shortage, post-study work rights for graduates with degrees that teach in-demand skills will be extended by two years. As a result, holders of certain bachelor's degrees will be permitted to remain in the country for a period of four years, five years for holders of master's degrees, and six years for holders of PhDs.
Although the degree programmes that will be accepted for the extended visas have not yet been disclosed, the nation is currently having trouble filling open positions in fields like nursing, engineering, and technology. The government will receive a report from the working group before the end of October with recommendations on which courses should be considered for eligibility.
…only 16% of foreign students continue to study after their studies are over. As a result, they will be able to work for longer and contribute to addressing some of the current, severe skill shortages by using the skills they have acquired in Australia…
The National Tertiary Education Union, Universities Australia, the International Education Association of Australia, and the government's departments of home affairs and education will all have representatives in the group.
The announcement was made at the government's Job and Skills Summit in Canberra, where stakeholders earlier this week discussed the possibility of hiring foreign graduates to fill Australia's nearly 500,000 job openings.
Jason Clare, the Minister of Education, stated on social media that only 16% of foreign students continue to study after their studies are over. As a result, they will be able to work for longer and contribute to addressing some of the current, severe skill shortages by using the skills they have acquired in Australia.
