In a Boost to Climate Research: New Scottish Program Launched
A A new global scholarship programme with a strong focus on climate change has been launched by British Council Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities. According to the Director of the British Council Scotland Leigh Gibson the scholarships will "generate powerful collaborations between art, humanities, and education to address the significant global issue of climate change."
Titled the EARTH Scholarships, the programme will provide funding for up to three months of in-person or hybrid exchanges to Scotland in 2023. PhD and Early Career Researchers in the Arts and Humanities are now accepting applications. Sources have told us that applications have already started for the course, slated to begin from 2023.

Urging more universities and institutions to do more for climate change, British Council director Scotland Leigh Gibson said, “Universities and higher education institutions have a central role to play in driving innovation to help us cope with oncoming challenges – in public discourse, and in building understanding of the science.”
According to a director at the institute, scholarship recipients will be placed at one of SGSAH's 17 member institutions and will have the opportunity to network with other scholarship recipients as well as PhD and ECRs working in the environmental arts and humanities in Scotland.
“The scholarship holders will also have the opportunity to meet with arts and cultural organisations in Scotland, benefit from cohort training and development opportunities, and to feed back to Scottish academics and organisations their own experience of researching responses to the climate emergency,” she added.
According to the partners, the EARTH Scholarships complement the Saltire Emerging Researcher programme offered by SGSAH in collaboration with the Scottish Funding Council. SGSAH noted that the new initiative aligns with its GREEN/GRADUATE Strategy and Operational Plan, while the British Council stated that it builds on the legacy of its Climate Connection programme.
