Is the New Australian Government a Boon for International Education?
S Some of Australia’s top universities have welcomed the appointment of Jason Clare as Education Minister in the newly formed Australian government. Sources say that some of the top universities such as Universities Australia are looking forward to working with the new government in Australia. A source from the ITECA was quoted as saying, “We want the new education minister to look to the nation’s independent skills training sector with confidence as it leads on several key measures of employer and student satisfaction”.
…election campaign included launching a new visa for "high achieving graduates from top global universities," providing "strategic support" to strengthen international engagements and national priorities…
Troy Williams who works with ITECA said, “We look forward to working with Ministers O’Connor and Clare as we look towards an integrated tertiary education system, one in which the skills training and higher education sector operate as one yet retain their separate strengths and identities.”
Colleges and Universities in Australia hope the new government keeps up to their word. Recommendations in the Essential Decisions for National Success policy papers released during the election campaign included launching a new visa for "high achieving graduates from top global universities," providing "strategic support" to strengthen international engagements and national priorities, and "re-engagement and diversification" of the sector, among other things.
Along with addressing degree-educated worker skills shortages, conducting Australia's research, and assisting in the challenge of climate and energy transition, universities can find ways to navigate a challenging geopolitical landscape and the sensitivities in our region, said Catriona Jackson, a member of a famous University in Australia.
