Japan Association of Overseas Studies Announces Annual Study Abroad Day
T The Japan Association of Overseas Studies has announced that November 12 will be designated as 'Study Abroad Day' in Japan, recognising and promoting the value of studying abroad. In a statement, the Japan Association of Overseas Studies confirmed the news, saying it had received permission from the Japan Anniversary Association to commemorate the day.
The statement said that the goal is to increase public awareness of study abroad opportunities so that Japan can continue to nurture significant and influential representatives of talent, play active roles in the global arena, and contribute to Japan's future through the experience they have gained from studying abroad.

According to JAOS sources, the chosen date is significant because it represents the first time Japanese women were given the opportunity to study abroad. On November 12, 1871, a small group of female students embarked on the Iwakura Mission, a Japanese diplomatic mission that sent five girls to the United States to research the role and education of American women. Prior to this, international education was only available to men. Umeko Tsuda, the youngest student, was only six years old at the time. Tsuda went on to found Tsuda University in Tokyo and to establish a scholarship programme for women to study in the United States.
According to a statement released by JAOS to commemorate the auspicious day, "Japan has a long history of sending its students abroad since around 600 AD, and many of those who returned from their study abroad experiences have contributed to Japan's growth."
To mark the occasion, JAOS has announced that the inaugural 'JAOS Study Abroad Awards' will take place on November 12, 2022.
Four experts from their respective international stages will judge the nomination-based awards, and award winners will be chosen from nominees in industries ranging from business and study abroad advocacy organisations to entertainment, sports, politics, and social media.
Japan experienced a significant decrease in outbound numbers, with just over 6,000 Japanese students studying abroad in 2021, a significant decrease from pre-pandemic levels.
