Jharkhand: Scholarships for Tribal Students for Higher Studies in the UK
J Jharkhand just became the first and the only state in India to introduce a state-funded initiative for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) students for pursuing higher education in the United Kingdom. The state-funded scholarship – Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship – is named after Jaipal Singh Munda, Jharkhand’s tribal icon, who was also the first tribal student to study overseas at Oxford University, England, between 1922 and 1929. He graduated with Honours in Economics from St John’s College, Oxford. He's a tribal icon known for his stellar contributions to society and the country. From a gold medal in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games (Captain of the Indian Hockey Team) to being a part of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Indian Constitution, Jaipal Singh Munda’s life and achievements have inspired this scholarship programme. And rightly so.
The first batch of six students who qualified for the maiden Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship are Hercules Singh Munda, MA at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies; Ajitesh Murmu, MA in Architecture at the University College of London; Akanksha Mery, MSc in Climate Change Science and Management at Loughborough University; Dinesh Bhagat, MSc in Climate Change, Development and Policy at the University of Sussex; Anjana Pratima Dungdung, MSc at the University of Warwick; and Priya Murmu, MA in Creative Writing at the Loughborough University.
…. the tribal youth will represent our culture, our values, our rich legacy, and our society on the world stage
“We hope that in the coming days, other students will also get inspired from them, the tribal youth will represent our culture, our values, our rich legacy, and our society on the world stage and will bring glory to Jharkhand and the rest of the country,” Chief Minister Hemant Soren said. The scholarship was launched on December 29, 2020, and the first batch of six students was selected in September 2021. The scholarship will provide all financial support to ten students of Jharkhand belonging to the ST community. The scholarship will cover one year Master's programme and a two-year MPhil programme in 22 courses in top 15 universities in the UK and Northern Ireland.
