K-12: Popular K-12 Educational Tool Edmodo Shuts Down Operation

A A well-liked collaboration and communication tool for K–12 teachers that has been around for more than ten years is permanently closing. Late on Monday, the company announced that Edmodo would be permanently closing.

The company stated in a statement posted online that it is no longer financially feasible "for us to maintain the level of service you deserve and that we can take pride in ourselves." Officials advised those who have data on Edmodo to delete it by the end of the day on September 22 if they don't want to lose it. Just a few weeks remain until that.

…It's so sad!” The Edmodo platform was one of my best apps when I started teaching in 2013...

Edmodo, which launched in 2008, claimed to have millions of users. It was well-liked by teachers and was initially seen as a rival to Schoology and Google Classroom. Some people paid tribute to it on social media after it folded. “It's so sad!” wrote one educator on Twitter. “Edmodo platform was one of my best apps when I started teaching in 2013.”

There were rumours that independent education businesses that offered free services might come to an end when China-based NetDragon Websoft acquired the company in 2018. UNESCO advised using the company's global reach for distance learning in the early stages of the pandemic.

So, what happens to all that private information after the tech company Edmodo, which claims to have more than 100 million users, goes out of business? This issue, according to some observers, will be put to the test when Edmodo shuts down.
