More International Students: Pick Finland for Higher Studies
F Finland's the new favourite among international students opting for higher studies. “All over the world, the coronavirus situation still affects the possibilities of our customers to travel or visit Finnish missions. As Finnish missions are reopening their operations, their queues are longer than normal,” said Anu Tarén, Head of Section at the Finnish Immigration Service. According to the service, 2021 saw a significant rise in the number of overseas students applying for first residence permits. From January to August of this year, 3,870 permits were issued to students. The service also said that most of these students are from Russia and China.
…now students can apply for an extended permit after completing their studies
To make the process even better, the Finnish Immigration Service’s next aim is to streamline the application process for obtaining a residence permit. It means a shorter wait period for the applications to get processed. By 2023, they aim is to shorten the process to within a month.
Another attractive aspect that has come to light is that now students can apply for an extended permit after completing their studies. It will allow students to find work or start a business if they don’t already have a job. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and higher educational institutions are working closely with the service to make it easier for overseas students to stay and work in Finland.
