Multidisciplinary, Comprehensive Educational Curriculum in Diabetic Eye Care Launched

D Despite the existence of efficient treatments, avoidable DR (diabetic retinopathy) -related vision loss and blindness continue to be significant issues, frequently as a result of delays in evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly in patient populations that are underserved.

DR is still the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults in the United States. Because the contributing factors are multidisciplinary, improving outcomes necessitates the collaborative and proactive efforts of a diverse range of clinicians who are essential to the ongoing, lifelong care of patients who have or are at risk for DR, from those who assess and diagnose DR to those who treat DR.

The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA), the California Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP), the Endocrine Society, freeCME.com, Global Education Group, Healio CME, Komodo Health, National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF), Center for Sustainable Health Care Quality and Equity (SHC), Faith Health Alliance, and HAIR (DR) have launched a multimethod educational collaboration (DR).

…the new EyeConnect course will address the unique educational needs of each key clinician audience… endocrinologists, family physicians, internists, nurse practitioners, ophthalmologists, optometrists, physician assistants, residents/fellows, and retina specialists…

According to sources, the new EyeConnect course will address the unique educational needs of each key clinician audience (endocrinologists, family physicians, internists, nurse practitioners, ophthalmologists, optometrists, physician assistants, residents/fellows, and retina specialists), while also providing access to patient education resources, in order to catalyse earlier patient referral and intervention for DR, with the goal of initiating treatment before vision-tainted patients. This goal reflects a patient-centered, evidence-based shift away from reactive (wait and see) DR care and toward proactive DR care.

Scott Scire, Vice President of Collaborative Partnerships at Paradigm Medical Communications, LLC, commented on the course's launch, saying, "Collaborative educational initiatives are critical for the development and implementation of educational activities that will assist clinicians in expanding and improving their understanding of DR management. The EyeConnect education collaborative partners recognise the value and importance of incorporating a synergistic instructional design that combines clinical, communication, and educational skills to support the medical community and patients with DR."
