NIRF 2022: Over Half of MBA Institutes Have No Analysis Papers to Credit Score, Study Finds
5 50% of the MBA institutes that took part in the NIRF Rankings this year have no published papers to their name. According to sources, the results paint a dismal picture of the ecosystem of management education in the nation as a whole.
The NIRF discovery is not surprising given that, according to the most recent rankings reports, which were made public a month ago, the majority of MBA institutes in the country focus on teaching.
In the management category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022, nearly 670 different institutes participated, but 383 of them, or 57.16 percent, lacked any published research. It is not surprising that the top 100 management institutes published 4,405 research papers, or 85% of the total, out of the 670 MBA institutes participating in NIRF.
…the report's findings indicate that management institutions are placing more of an emphasis on "case studies'' and less emphasis on research publications…
In three years, the average number of management-related papers published across all institutes is only 6.5. This translates into an average annual publication rate of just two papers. This belongs to the category that received the lowest rating. In contrast, each institution publishes an average of 168 papers in the field of engineering. There are 1,181 participating engineering colleges and institutes, and it is estimated that 6% of them don't have any research papers.
As a result, India only accounts for 4.45% of all publications related to the management discipline worldwide. In contrast, we contribute 6.93% of the total engineering research conducted worldwide.
Given that the main objective of many colleges is to educate undergraduate students, the NIRF report claims that the fact that so many institutes have not produced any research publications is "not surprising." The report's findings indicate that management institutions are placing more of an emphasis on "case studies" and less emphasis on research publications.
However, the report also contains a footnote that warns, "As an additional caution, it may be noted that this data pertains to publications that belong to the management discipline as defined by the Web of Science." It is clear that many of the best business schools also publish in fields like psychology, social sciences, information technology, and economics. However, because these disciplines are not regarded as being a part of the main management discipline, they are not considered in this analysis.
The India Rankings, which rate higher education institutions using 11 different factors, are in their seventh consecutive edition. The Department of Higher Education, which is a division of the Ministry of Education, is the publisher of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) report. Using "objective parameters and metrics with factual data gathered from applicant institutions themselves as well as third party sources," the report claims to use.
