National Education Policy: Aims to attract World Ranking Universities to open Offshore Campuses in India

I India’s new focus is to become a study abroad destination. The academic year 2019-2020 recorded a rise in the number of enrollments (a total of 49,348) of overseas students with courses like B. Tech, BBA, Medicine, and B. Sc. attracting the maximum enrollments. Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the present government is aiming at bringing the top 100 QS World Ranking Universities to India. Off-shore campuses of these top universities and Indian educational institutes will help Indian students to study in Indian universities as well as bring more foreign nationals to India.

The recent meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Nunzio Quacquarelli, CEO and Managing Director of QS Quacquarelli Symonds, appears to be a positive step towards achieving this goal shortly. QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd. is a British company specialising in the analysis of higher education institutions around the world. The firm publishes the annual university rankings, and studies have shown that Indian universities are often found to be doing well in the ranking system.

According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), the Indian state of Karnataka recorded the highest number of enrollment of overseas students, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Haryana, Telangana, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh.
