New Education Policy Roadmap to Make High School Graduates Future Ready?
A Americans have always relied on their education system to ready graduates for successful careers. However, the fear of an outdated traditional educational system hampering the skills needed to succeed in the 21st century seems to have parents and educators worried.
As a solution, the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) in collaboration with the Coalition for Career Development (CCD) Centre have released a state education policy report designed for K-12 education. CASEL CEO and President Dr. Aaliyah A. Samuel said about the report, “Today, various pathways exist for future success that value all learning. We need to move beyond a narrow focus on success as only a four-year college degree ignores entrepreneurial opportunities, career and technical education, and the evolving nature of work.” She added that emotional and social skills were equally important as education in a modern, fast-paced working environment. She also emphasised the fact that the ability to collaborate effectively and cultivate relationships were skills that were just as important.
…the report calls for an urgent need for stakeholders to work together to future ready leaders of tomorrow, and the report also suggests the groundwork for states and institutions needed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to take them to a bright future.…
The problem is not just felt by parents, corporations are struggling to find the skilled workforce they need in the 21st century as well. To close the gap, the report suggests the following:
- Effective communication and collaboration with supervisors, co-workers, and other stakeholders.
- Developing deeper relationships with mentors and others that can support students in their career path.
- Developing and sustaining a sense of purpose and belonging
- Being mentally and physically healthy
- Being civically engaged and culturally responsive.
CCD Centre Vice President of Research Scott H. Solberg had this to say about the need for a better system, “Bridging social and emotional learning and career and workforce development is a win-win. By promoting the social and emotional development of all students, they are given rich opportunities to explore and practice new skills in a broad array of career fields. This can’t just be the work of educators alone. To achieve this shift, we need policymakers, business leaders, community partners, families, students, and educators working together to achieve this vision.”
The report calls for an urgent need for stakeholders to work together to future ready leaders of tomorrow. The report also suggests the groundwork for states and institutions needed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to take them to a bright future.
