Read On to Know How Phoenix Union High School Streamlined District College Opportunities
W While there are young students confused about pursuing postsecondary education, there are some that lack an academic role model. There are also others who do not have confidence in their ability to succeed in college, and there are those that believe it is simply too expensive. All of this adds up to a stressful and uncertain time for teenagers and parents.
Most studies show that education has a significant impact on one's economic prospects, with a college degree earning hundreds of thousands more than a high school diploma. This raises the question of what more the American educational system can do to increase access to this clear path of opportunity.
Phoenix Union High School believes it has found an answer. The university launched a programme to make higher education more accessible by simplifying and demystifying the process. We have eliminated barriers, created a transparent and efficient process, and alleviated much of the stress by collaborating with one of the state's top colleges, Arizona State University.
…the Letter Program started in 2018, when all incoming freshmen received a personalised letter that outlined a path to college and explained the requirements…
The best part is that Phoenix high school students are not required to apply. All graduating seniors' transcripts are sent to Arizona State by the district. If they meet the admission criteria, which include a 3.0 grade point average and specific course credits such as maths, English, and lab science, the college automatically accepts them — no exceptions and no onerous applications required.
The Letter Program started in 2018, when all incoming freshmen received a personalized letter that outlined a path to college and explained the requirements. A progress letter would detail the credits each student had earned or areas in which they were deficient at the start of their sophomore and junior years. If someone had fallen behind, additional instructions were provided on how to remain eligible.
Let's fast forward to this year. The same freshmen from 2018 received a different letter, this time congratulating them on their acceptance to Arizona State University. Over 1,000 students were accepted, and nearly 700 have chosen to attend Arizona State this fall as a result of the programme. More Phoenix Union High seniors than ever before are seeing their college dreams come true.
