Strengths Based Learning to Be the New Focus of Education?
A A strengths-based approach can help build student confidence, encourage efficacious behaviours, and support life-long learning pursuits, according to the Reinert Centre for Transformative Teaching and Learning.
As schools look for new ways to personalise learning, strength-based learning has been one of the methods suggested by experts.
…strengths-based education is a learner-centred approach to teaching that helps students identify, articulate and apply their individual skills relevant to their learning needs…
The Reinert Centre for Transformative Teaching and Learning at St. Louis University has spoken about strengths learning and had this to say, “strengths-based education is a learner-centred approach to teaching that helps students identify, articulate and apply their individual skills relevant to their learning needs. Based on research from social work, positive psychology and business, a strengths-based approach can help build student confidence, encourage efficacious behaviours, and support life-long learning pursuits.”
Experts emphasise the importance of educators not only assisting students in identifying their strengths, but also in applying them to their learning.
A student may have limited English skills but know maths beyond their grade level, or a student may be a very strong writer or understand text at a high level – but only in their native language. When students' English skills improve, they often advance quickly, but other strengths aren't recognised or developed until that happens.
A source was quoted as saying, “I think what we are trying to do is build an appreciation for what students who have English as a second or third language come with. They come with a rich language, sometimes two, and culture.”
