UGC: Industry Experts May Soon Teach at Central Universities in India
R Recently, at a meeting held between the UGC Chairman and the Vice Chancellors of Central Universities, it was discussed that, very soon, the University Grants Commission (UGC) will introduce a system where various industry experts will be able to teach full-time or part-time, depending on the requirement of the concerned university.
Those willing to apply for the post will be able to do so after the committee has come up with a portal.
…the industry experts will be able to teach in universities without a Ph.D. or NET qualification…
However, the decision has been criticised by many professors and students. One such voice comes from Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union President Aishe Ghosh who calls the move, “A step towards dismantling higher education.” Delhi University Professor Abha Dev Habib feels that the move is nothing but the Government “freeing itself of the pressure of giving jobs to qualified teachers on a permanent basis”.
The industry experts will be able to teach in universities without a Ph.D. or NET qualification. Ironically, the decision goes against UGC’s minimum qualification criteria for teachers to teach in a university as a professor or an associate professor. According to the aforementioned criteria, a Ph.D. is mandatory. There are talks of introducing new positions – professor of practice and associate professor of practice. Industry experts retiring at the age of 60 can also apply, provided they will be able to work till the age of 65.
