UK Launches the Largest Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme for the the Sub-Saharan Africa Region
T The University of York, Kaplan International Pathways and Japanese charity Ashinaga Association have come together and launched a £1.2 million scholarship scheme to benefit the Sub-Saharan African students.
The scholarship is described as the “largest undergraduate scholarship” for students from Africa at any UK university. Under the scheme, full bursaries will be given to up to six students from the sub-Saharan Africa region to study at the UK university each year. Alongwith the full tuition support, the selected students will also get bursaries for living costs, visa, travel costs, funding to participate in a leadership and skills development program, a year prior to the commencement of the degree course.
…together we aim to contribute to Sub-Saharan Africa’s development by providing students with education, network, and opportunities…
Apart from the course of their choice, the students will undergo a foundation course to prepare them as future leaders in their communities. Students will be selected via the Ashinaga Africa Initiative, running since 2014. As of now, the organisation is active in 48 African countries. “Together we aim to contribute to sub-Saharan Africa’s development by providing students with the education, network, and opportunities necessary to become the next generation of compassionate leaders for Africa,” said Ashinaga founder Yoshiomi Tamai.
“We started our engagement with Ashinaga way back in 2020 and we were impressed by their programs, and therefore choosing them as a strategic partner for this initiative made a lot of sense,” said York vice-chancellor Charles Jeffrey.
