UK and India: Announce New Schemes for Young Graduates
T Together with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has unveiled a programme that will permit 3,000 recent Indian graduates to work and reside in the UK for up to two years. According to the UK government, the beginning of the reciprocal UK-India Young Professionals Scheme is a "significant moment" for the bilateral ties between the two countries. Sunak made the announcement and added, "I can attest to the incredible value of our strong historical and cultural ties with India.
The UK's Prime Minister added, "I am pleased that even more of India's brightest young people will now have the opportunity to experience all that life has to offer in the UK - and vice-versa, making our economies and societies richer." It also demonstrates a broader commitment to "forging stronger links with the Indo-Pacific region to strengthen both our economies."
…the Indo-Pacific is increasingly crucial for our security and our prosperity… it is teeming with dynamic and fast-growing economies, and the next decade will be defined by what happens in this region…
A Government source added, India is a focus for the UK, and talks for a trade agreement are currently taking place. India has more connections than almost any other nation in the Indo-Pacific region. The value of trade between the UK and India is currently $24 billion. Given that nearly a quarter of all international students in the UK are from India, the UK also highlighted the significance of India as a source for international students. “The Indo-Pacific is increasingly crucial for our security and our prosperity. It is teeming with dynamic and fast-growing economies, and the next decade will be defined by what happens in this region,” Sunak said.
The UK provides a Youth Mobility Scheme for young people from other countries, including India, Australia, Canada, Monaco, New Zealand, San Marino, and Iceland, as well as a separate Youth Mobility Scheme ballot for qualified people from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. These countries all have a similar age range (18 to 30).
