UKCISA Launches UK’s First-Ever International Student Charter
A At its annual conference in Newcastle on June 15, UKCISA announced that it was launching the UK's first ever international student charter. Sources from UKCISA say the goal of the project is to assure students worldwide that the UK is an international student’s “home from home”.
At the conference, over 85 British Universities took a pledge to offer a world-class student experience and they also promised to meet the expectations of overseas applicants, right from pre-arrival to graduation.
…we felt the phrase ‘making a home in the UK’ rather than talking about logistics or accommodation, was an important signifier that we [as students] are not just passing through; this is a really important time in our lives and this is our chosen home from home…
The charter, that builds on the successful #WeAreInternational campaign, was written by a team of student ambassadors who shared their vision and perspective on what international students want from authorities and colleges.
UKCISA facilitated dialogue between students and industry stakeholders to ensure that the final document reflected a wide range of needs and perspectives. Lord Karan Bilimoria, CBE DL and UKCISA President told reporters, “As a former international student, I understand the importance of valuing the student voice. I’m proud that this student charter is led by students, with significant contributions from across the education sector”
Katie Crabtree, a PhD student from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, contributed to the charter and spoke about the deliberation that went into the final wording. “We were really intentional in what we wanted to say. We felt the phrase ‘making a home in the UK’ rather than talking about logistics or accommodation, was an important signifier that we [as students] are not just passing through; this is a really important time in our lives and this is our chosen home from home”, she was quoted as saying.
