With No Mid-Year Exams: What are Kids Up To?
W With no mid-year exams, schools have created fun learning activities that allow students to learn new skills, collaborate and communicate with one another more, and learn independently. Here are some examples, ranging from vegetable harvesting to learning muay thai, and the lessons they teach.
Curriculum was redesigned by teachers at Xinmin Secondary to include more group work and presentations. During an English Language class, for example, students worked in groups to conduct research on various social causes, such as ACRES (an animal welfare charity) or SPD Singapore (a charity that supports people with disabilities). Their goal is to persuade their classmates to support their chosen cause through a presentation.
…there were disagreements, but I learnt that instead of choosing sides, we can first list the pros and cons of each idea before deciding which is the best…
Secondary 3 student Koh Xin En Amelia said about this experience, “Working as a group allowed my teammates and I to share our thoughts and ideas before sifting through them and choosing the strongest points for our presentation. There were disagreements, but I learnt that instead of choosing sides, we can first list the pros and cons of each idea before deciding which is the best.”
"Students learn best when they are given opportunities to interact with objects and their physical environment," says School Staff Developer Ms Lim Swee Kheng. With this in mind, Gan Eng Seng Primary school decided to plan more hands-on experiences to help students connect what they learn in class to the real world.
Archery, muay thai, outdoor cooking, and kite-making... As part of a Learning Festival, Hua Yi Secondary students had the opportunity to try out new activities.
"We hope that these programmes will spark interest in our students and inspire them to continue exploring an area or skill that they are interested in," says Mdm Lye Yoke Pheng Suzanne, Head of Department of Mathematics and one of the festival's co-organizers.
