Overwhelming Number of PG Applications: Pan African University

T The Pan African University has received a total of 10,789 applicants for the 2021/22 call of applications which went out in the month of June last year. The overwhelming number has come from 53 member states of the African Union Commission . Out of the total applications, 8,658 have come for MA/MSc programmes, and 2,131 for PhD. Pan African University – owned by the African Union Commission – is a continental postgraduate institution that offers full scholarships to Africa’s masters and doctorate students.

The university’s social media post read “The number of applications received by the Pan African University has increased significantly over the past eight years,” …“The selection process (for 2021/22) is being finalised and is almost completed and notifications will be out very soon.” Due to the overwhelming number of applications it has been receiving, against around 400 available seats, in the past three to four years, the Pan African University has enjoyed the reputation of being one of the most popular universities in the continent.

What makes Pan African University a choice institution is the fact that it has so much to offer its students. The university offers studies in 57 disciplines, including 29 masters and 16 PhD programs. The university has four thematic institutes which include the Institute of Water and Energy Sciences at the University of Tlemcen, Algeria, the Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya, the Institute for Life and Earth Sciences, including health and agriculture, hosted by the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and the Institute of Governance, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Yaoundé II in Cameroon. The PG students are selected from all African countries and the African diaspora. Not more than 20% of the students come from the thematic campus host country. There are special considerations for gender and disability.
