Anthology Releases 2022 Report: Major Critical Shift in Student Learner Experiences Found

A Anthology has completed and published the findings of its comparison study on student expectations and mindsets at international universities in 2022. Sources say that the study included over 5,000 higher education leaders and current students from around the world, including the United States, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, India, Japan, Spain, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

The survey findings found that there is room for improvement in the learner experience in order to achieve better outcomes because student expectations following the pandemic do not entirely match what university leaders envision for the future.

…as universities continue to drive digital transformation, they are faced with new challenges around everything from course delivery and support services to accessibility and how they outfit their students and staff with technology…

Aside from the pandemic, survey respondents stated that the economy continues to have the greatest impact on learners in all regions (73%), followed by a lack of access to technology (35 percent).

Results also showed that lack of access to technology is significantly worse in the Middle East and Africa, where 54 percent of students say it is a problem.

Although most university leaders are aware of these challenges, only 30% of higher education leaders in the Middle East and Africa believe that technology access is a concern for their students, indicating a disconnect between their perception and the student experience.

According to the survey results, learners worldwide want – and expect – technology to be more prevalent in their higher education experience and university leaders agree, with 60% stating that their university currently lacks the appropriate digital learning tools to help students succeed.

The survey results also showed that roughly 80% of students now prefer that at least some of their courses or instructional meetings take place online.

Leaders are steering their universities in the right direction, with more than a third (38 percent) indicating that a mix of online and in-person course delivery will be the model at their institution by 2025, up from 16 percent now.

Anthology collaborated with Thrive Analytics on the 2022 survey, Comparing Global University Mindsets and Student Expectations.

"As universities continue to drive digital transformation, they are faced with new challenges around everything from course delivery and support services to accessibility and how they outfit their students and staff with technology," said Jim Milton, Chairman and CEO of Anthology.

As leaders consider the impact of technology and data on the overall student experience, we believe that technology will have a significant impact on the future of higher education globally. The findings of this study support that belief, he added.
