Assessment Paper Reports Chances of Geo-Political Shocks

A According to a recent assessment, scientists, institutions, and researchers need to be ready for geopolitical shocks that could restrict global networks and dramatically constrain the spectrum of potential collaboration partners.

The assessment report suggests that universities could perhaps diversify their academic partners to avoid dependencies that can become vulnerabilities and develop clear policies to vet international research partnerships in order to deal with potential future challenges. They should also increase their understanding of a rapidly changing international research landscape.

…recent events will have wider relevance for western collaboration with China and other authoritarian regimes that may be tempted to pursue expansionist foreign policies…

The report also added, “Recent events will have wider relevance for western collaboration with China and other authoritarian regimes that may be tempted to pursue expansionist foreign policies.” Co-author of the report, Jo Johnson added, “When the geopolitics shift, global science rapidly goes from win-win to battlespace. Western countries have excluded Russia from science partnerships in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine, which has a clear read-across for what could happen in other theatres in East Asia.” he added.

In response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has urged for the development of a "new approach" to the nation's connections with other nations and science policy. Overseas studies and joint scientific research projects create “long-term mutual bonds” between both people and institutions, DAAD said.
