Association of Commonwealth Universities Holds Event to Promote International Partnership and Innovations

T The Association of Commonwealth Universities held a major event that brought together business and government leaders to find opportunities for global collaboration and innovations for sustainable growth. The event was an opportunity to highlight how UK exports are driving systemic change in education systems around the world by delivering inclusive programmes that are tailored to local economies.

As the Commonwealth Games' hosts, national pride was understandably high. British businesses showcased their cutting-edge methods for industry-based skill development and technology that can expand access to education globally.

Joanna Newman, chief executive and secretary general of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, emphasised at the event that through research, community engagement, and education, universities "are contributing to realising healthier, greener, fairer societies, and finding solutions to pressing global challenges."

By 2030, the UK government wants to export $1 trillion worth of goods across all economic sectors, with a £35 billion goal for education. The West Midlands Growth Company, the official economic development organisation for the area, and the UK's Department for International Trade collaborated to host the summit. UK House is a component of the Business and Tourism Programme, the first initiative of its kind to be connected to the Commonwealth Games.

The University of Birmingham is assisting in bringing about the 2022 Commonwealth Games as a major sponsor, serving as the official host venue for hockey and squash, housing the largest athlete village, providing training facilities for numerous sports, and having over 100 employees and 450 volunteers throughout the Games.

Lord Bilimoria, chancellor of the University of Birmingham, expressed his satisfaction with the university's involvement in the Games. He said, "Our Commonwealth connections across education and research partnerships are deep and wide-ranging. I am delighted to contribute to this exciting event at UK House, which showcases the opportunities for collaboration that the UK’s higher education sector provides to business and industry around the world."
