CUBO Awards: Best in UK Student Services Honoured

C CUBO held an award ceremony last week to honour UK campus and commercial services professionals. During the ceremony, awards were distributed in 9 categories to deserving entities. The awards, presented at Lancaster University during the College & University Business Officers summer conference, recognised six institutions in England, as well as the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland.

Speaking to the media, CUBO’s CEO, Jan Cappo, said, "Many of this year’s entries were examples of innovation to support students during COVID, and the quality of these was exceptional."

A source from CUBO spoke to newspapers after the event, saying "The non-academic experience has always been important, but during 2020/21, universities really stepped up to support students in lockdown, whether delivering thousands of meals to those self-isolated, creating a Christmas Day for those unable to travel home, providing additional wellbeing support to combat loneliness, or inventing new virtual social and physical activities to help build connections and friendships."

The University of Bath won the overall Campus Experience of the Year award, while the University of Nottingham was recognised in two categories: Excellence in Sports Experience and Best Marketing Campaign.

According to CUBO's CEO, Bath stood out as the Campus Experience of the Year winner, for the wide scope of action it took during the pandemic. The University of Bath assisted students greatly by providing food and drink vouchers, exercise equipment, and indoor gardening packs, as well as encouraging regular testing through online events such as language cafes, book clubs, and support sessions, as well as takeaway pop-up outlets.

During the award ceremony, the late Andrew Nightingale, former chair of the UUK/GuildHE Accommodation Code of Practice Governing Board and former director of Estates at the University of Essex, received CUBO's first honorary membership award.
