In the first few months of school, teachers found that kids were finding it hard to concentrate on learning owing to distractions at home. For example, Harish’s father is a daily-wage worker who says he needs to take his wife once a month to a dargah to treat her “mental illness”. When they are out, no one’s there to ensure Harish goes to school.

In the first few weeks since schools opened in Delhi, teachers found that students were finding it hard to focus on learning, getting back to school, and had extremely tense moments with what was going on at home. Teachers found that stress was more in students from vulnerable sections of society. To combat this, the government has planned to teach students the basics of learning maths, writing, and reading.
