Despite Defers in Admission: Sri Lankans Still Demand for Study Abroad

A According to a top agent in the nation, Sri Lankan students continue to have a strong desire to study abroad despite the ongoing unrest, problems with foreign exchange payments, and political upheaval.

Some UK universities are unsure despite the demand, and with ongoing financial problems, this demand has put more pressure on the market. Speaking to the media, Campus Direct UK, a company that works with students who want to study abroad primarily in the UK, Canada, and Australia, said that numbers have been rising over the past year and that the unrest in the nation as a whole has not had an impact on those numbers based on its preliminary data findings.

Amrith Weerasekera, Director at Campus Direct UK, described the developments as "really amazing," particularly the rise in the number of applicants from the UK.

"While there were problems with the procedure and the impeachment of the previous president, those have somewhat subsided, and it is obvious that things won't get better in six months; it will take at least a year.", the director at Campus Direct UK said. While the demand for studying in the UK is high amongst Sri Lankans, the University of Huddersfield and the University of South Wales, two distinct universities in the UK, are both concerned about this in particular. Rumor has it that both have decided to put off taking any Sri Lankan students.

When asked for comment by the media, the University of South Wales responded, saying: "We are still processing applications from Sri Lanka that are in the advanced stages of the application process and look forward to welcoming them in September." “We have, however, taken the difficult decision to offer Sri Lankan students who are at an earlier stage of the process places in the next available intake, where possible in January and February 2023,” a spokesperson said.
