Future Plans for SUNY: Means More Enrollment

N New York Governor, Kathy Hochul, is all about big goals when it comes to the State University of New York (SUNY). The State University of New York, in the last decade or so, has seen decline in the enrollment numbers. But now it may be the time for the numbers to start going up as the attention will now go more into research opportunities and fine tuning of roles of some institutions across its 64 campus system.

The State University of New York has been around for 74 years and is known for being the largest public comprehensive higher education system in the U.S. with its 64 campuses in total. The newly announced plan for the State University of New York calls for boosting enrollment to 500,000 students. And this comes after the governor announced Stony Brook and the University at Buffalo as flagship campuses, two institutions with track records of high enrollments.

The aim is to bring in $1 billion a year in federal research funding by the year 2030. And speaking of funding, as a gesture of support, the state will help both universities with $100 million each in capital funding towards new engineering facilities. The research missions at the University at Albany and Binghamton University will also set a target of receiving $500 million annually each in federal research funding. The officials at Stony Brook University and the University at Buffalo lauded the move by saying it "acknowledges the excellence and reputations of our universities and it will further enhance our ability to continue to recruit the world’s most accomplished faculty and attract outstanding students."

Governor Kathy Hochul’s plan works toward making the application process to all SUNY institutions simpler. Its New York State Tuition Assistance Program will help part-time students with financial aid. The plan, however, has nothing to do with New York's well-known Excelsior Scholarship program, a program that allows students to attend public colleges in the State University of New York and City University of New York systems tuition free.
