Government Reports Find Indian Students Studying Abroad Face Employment Challenges Upon Returning Home

S Studying abroad is often seen as a secure pathway to professional success in India. However, research indicates that finding a job after returning home may be a critical challenge. According to a government report cited by MSM, only 22% of Indian students who studied abroad between 2015 and 2019 were able to secure a professional position after returning home. This is despite the fact that 750,365 Indian students went abroad to study in 2022, a 68% increase compared to the previous year.

One of the obstacles faced by returning Indian students is the lack of recognition of foreign degrees and diplomas in the national job market. This is paired with “ambivalence” from Indian employers towards internationally-educated Indian graduates who often prefer to hire Indian-educated people. The pandemic has also led some businesses to be inclined to select local applicants due to travel restrictions and public health concerns, and has resulted in companies scaling down hiring.

…as stakeholders in international education, it is our responsibility to provide students with the resources, guidance and support they need to succeed in their careers…

To help students overcome these challenges, Sanjay Laul, CEO, and founder of MSM, emphasised that students “must be aware of the potential challenges they may face when returning home”. He added that “as stakeholders in international education, it is our responsibility to provide students with the resources, guidance and support they need to succeed in their careers”. This may involve developing partnerships with local employers, promoting cross-cultural communication, and understanding, and fostering alumni networks to help students build their professional connections.

In addition, returning Indian students can benefit from networking opportunities. This can include events where they can meet with potential employers, as well as online forums and social media groups where they can connect with other professionals in their field.

Finally, returning Indian students can benefit from training and development opportunities. This can include courses and workshops that help them develop the skills that are in demand in the job market.

It is important for returning Indian students to be aware of the potential challenges they may face when returning home. By working together, we can ensure that studying abroad remains a valuable and rewarding experience for students, both during and after their education.
