Michael Casserly Legacy Scholarship: Awarded to Norfolk High School Graduate Ayana Askew

A Ayana Askew, a 2022 graduate of Virginia's Norfolk Public Schools, won the Dr. Michael Casserly Legacy Scholarship for Educational Courage and Justice. The award was presented to the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS).

In a statement to the media, Askew said she will utilise the $10,000 college scholarship to pursue an English degree at Spelman College in Atlanta.

…am pleased to have chosen Ayana Askew as this year’s recipient of a scholarship named in my honour… she is extremely deserving of this scholarship and is a prime example of the wonderful graduates our nation’s urban public schools produce...

The scholarship is part of the Council's Dr. Michael Casserly Legacy Award for Educational Courage and Justice, it honours the former executive director's legacy. The award, now in its second year, is awarded to a person who has made remarkable contributions to urban education in grades K–12 by taking a fearless and passionate position on issues of educational fairness and equity.

“She is extremely deserving of this scholarship and is a prime example of the wonderful graduates our nation’s urban public schools produce. As she pursues a degree in English, I know she has a bright future ahead of her and I thank Curriculum Associates for their generous support,” said Dr. Michael Casserly.

Woody Paik, executive vice president of Curriculum Associates told the press, “Through our partnership with the Council of the Great City Schools, we are proud to once again sponsor the Dr. Michael Casserly Legacy Scholarship for Educational Courage and Justice and recognize a standout rising college student.”
