Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence Celebrates its Inaugural Graduation

O On January 30, the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in Abu Dhabi held its first commencement ceremony, with 52 students from 24 countries receiving post-graduate degrees in the key AI fields of computer vision and machine learning.

His Highness Sheikh Theyab bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, President-Designate of COP28 UAE, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of MBZUAI; H.E. Bruno Le Maire, French Minister for Economy and Finance, and other dignitaries attended the gala event.

During the event Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence hosted an AI and Sustainability Symposium where AI experts discussed next generation solutions.

Professor Eric Xing, President and University Professor of MBZUAI, was the chief speaker. He was joined by Professor Daniela Rus, Director of MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and a member of MBZUAI's Board of Trustees, and Phil Blunsom, Chief Scientist at Cohere.AI and Professor at Oxford. Professor Timothy Baldwin, Acting Provost at MBZUAI, moderated the panel.

Addressing attendees and students, a dignitary from MBZUAI said, "MBZUAI was specifically designed to be a catalyst for research across multiple sectors, including business, IT, energy, transportation, education and healthcare, and sustainability - and you, the inaugural MBZUAI graduating class, will be the pioneers who help turn that research into reality."

At the time of graduation, 63% of the inaugural class had confirmed employment, Ph.D. placements, paid internships, or startups; and 91% would remain in the UAE. Female students account for approximately 35% of the total class.

All quarters lauded the inaugural programme at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. Professor Xing, who attended the conference, described the programme as a foundation for technological competitiveness in artificial intelligence. He also stated that MBZUAI is dedicated to conducting transformative research, developing cutting-edge technology, and training creative and hardworking individuals.
