More Work Needed to Help Afghan Girls Get Education: Charmaghz

M Members of the Afghan NGO have pleaded with the EWF to do more for girls' education in Afghanistan. Speaking to delegates at the Education World Forum in London the plea was led by Freshta Karim, founder of Charmaghz.

At the meeting, she pleaded, “It seems like the future that we looked for is out of reach,” she said. “But I don’t think it is out of reach.” She shared with her that her niece, who just turned 17 years old and is in the 11th grade, sent her a message asking, "What if the world forgets us?"

Ms. Freshta made the forum aware that although the Taliban had allowed primary girl students to attend schools, secondary schools turned away girls who arrived for lessons in March. She pleaded with members that education boards across the world should do more for girls' education in Afghanistan.

…If 100 countries could give only 10 scholarships to Afghans it would be 1,000 scholarships per year. For our country these 1,000 scholarships will matter a lot. They will go back; they will fix their country…

Freshta Karim, founder of Charmaghz was not the only one to rally for girls' education in Afghanistan post-Taliban takeover. Malala Yousafzai had urged Muslim countries to condemn the Taliban's ban on girls' secondary education.

Ms Freshta Karim said to members of the forum, “If 100 countries could give only 10 scholarships to Afghans it would be 1,000 scholarships per year. For our country, these 1,000 scholarships will matter a lot. They will go back; they will fix their country.” She further added It shocks me to see that children are aware of our capacity to forget them, and ignore them and their suffering. They have lost their trust in adults. I ask you to tell them that they’re not forgotten.
