New Proposed University System Law in Spain to Offer PSW Rights to Non-EU Students

A A new university system law is being proposed in Spain. Sources say that the new law will allow non-EU students at Spanish universities to stay for at least a year after graduation without renewing their visa.

Speaking to the media, Universities minister Joan Subirats said, “We have to find ways to retain that talent that we have trained so they can keep their residence status and look for work for two years.”

According to reports, the length of time could be extended to two years, but this is still being decided.

…these changes could make the country even more appealing to students from this region as it would open up the possibility of studying and working in Europe after graduation…

If the new law is passed, international students at Spanish universities won’t need to apply for a resident permit every year; instead, their permits will be valid for the duration of their studies. Alfonso Gentil, a director at SEPIE, told a newspaper that he believes the impact of the new proposed law will be very positive for the increase of the arrival of international students.

According to the website, Study Portals, Spain provides 6% of the 8,788 programmes available in the EU and EEA region, far less than Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, and France. The new proposed law will increase international students coming to Spain for further education, thus likely to make Spain a hot spot for international education. Jinha Gavilanes, president of Studee, while speaking on the subject said, “These changes could make the country even more appealing to students from this region as it would open up the possibility of studying and working in Europe after graduation.”
