Open Doors 2022 Report: International Student Enrolments at US Colleges and Universities Surging

T The number of international students studying in the United States has increased this academic year, according to a report by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the International Educational Exchange. Based on the Open Doors 2022 Report, 948,519 international students exceeding 200 countries attended higher education institutions in the United States during the 2021/2022 academic year, a 4% increase over the previous academic year.

Following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States experienced a strong year-over-year rebound in new international student enrolments (an increase of 80%), demonstrating the country's ongoing commitment to international educational exchange, the report found.

According to experts, the Open Doors data show a strong desire among international students to visit the United States to further their education. 90% of international students enrolled are now enrolled in classes on American campuses. According to the US Department of Commerce, international students made $32 billion in economic contributions to the US in 2021.

In what is seen as good news, first-time international enrolment at American colleges and universities increased by 80% annually, reaching pre-pandemic levels. Every state and territory in the United States continued to enrol new international students, and 44 out of the 50 states saw an increase of more than 50% in the number of new international students.

More than 184,000 students pursued Optional Practical Training (OPT), a programme that enables people to gain practical work experience after academic study, in addition to the international students who were enrolled.

China and India account for the majority (52%) of all foreign students studying in the US from the global community. With 290,086 students on American campuses in 2021/22, China is still the top sending nation (down 9% from the previous year).

In 2021/22, India, the second-largest sending nation, sent 199,182 international students, an increase of 19% from the previous year.
