PM Modi: 14,500 Schools to be Upgraded as PM-SHRI with NEP Components

O On Teachers' Day, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that 14,500 Indian schools will be upgraded as part of a new centrally sponsored scheme called PM-SHRI (PM Schools for Rising India), that will showcase all components of the National Education Policy-2020.

Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Education Minister, first announced the plan in June during a conference with states and union territories in Gujarat. During the day, the PM met with teachers who won National Awards and stated that the schools would "encapsulate the full spirit of the NEP."

The schools identified under the scheme include those run by the Centre, states, Union Territories, and local governments. PM-SHRI will showcase all components of the National Education Policy-2020, act as model schools, and mentor other schools in their vicinity," the government said in a statement.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi said, "Today, on #TeachersDay I am glad to announce a new initiative - the development and upgradation of 14,500 schools across India under the Pradhan Mantri Schools For Rising India (PM-SHRI) Yojana. These will become model schools which will encapsulate the full spirit of NEP."

The NEP provisions that will be implemented at PM-SHRI will place a strong emphasis on achieving learning outcomes in each grade level rather than passing exams. "Assessment at all levels will be competency-based and based on conceptual understanding and application of knowledge to real-life situations," the government stated.

During his interaction with teachers, Modi emphasised the importance of teachers in the implementation of the NEP-2020, which he stated should be the foundation of students' lives.
