QS Spokesperson William Barbieri: India Should Emphasise Enhancing Global Research Collaboration

W With the new QS ranking on the horizon, QS spokesperson William Barbieri has called upon India to emphasise enhancing global research collaboration if it wants to grow its ranking in education.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Barbieri answered questions relating to India’s ranking, how the country can grow in the education field, and even gave suggestions on how India can improve the quality of education. In a recent interview, Mr. William Barbieri also commended India for producing the research to garner growing renown among academics.

…in order to disseminate its work to the wider world and enhance its global academic reputation, India should place a strong emphasis on enhancing its international collaboration in research...

When questioned as to why India’s academic record stagnates, the QS Spokesperson tried to balance opinion and said that there are an equal number of institutes that grew, and a same number stagnated. He exclaimed that this shows India is clearly producing the research to garner growing renown among academics.

He drew attention to the fact that India has produced only 17% of its scholarly output alongside international partners, this is…less than a third of that produced by global leaders in cross border research such as the UK. Mr Barbieri was quoted as saying, “In order to disseminate its work to the wider world and enhance its global academic reputation, India should place a strong emphasis on enhancing its international collaboration in research.”

Mr. William was impressed with the fact that India’s tertiary enrolment rate continues to grow which is fundamental to the aspirations espoused in the National Education Policy 2020. He however cautioned that India has an urgent need to balance teaching capacity with a growing student population. “Given the scale of India’s higher education expansion and its growing number of universities, internationalisation will always be hindered by domestic difficulties such as disparate economic and social demographics, booming population and infrastructural challenges.” he was quoted as saying.
