Record Applicants are Being Interviewed at the US Embassy in India

O On June 7, the US Embassy in India observed its sixth annual Student Visa Day, with the US Consulate General in Mumbai interviewing over 1,300 student visa applicants as part of the festivities. The interview process has seen a record number of applicants applying to the USA. A never-before-seen phenomenon.

Over 4,000 students were interviewed for student visas at the US embassy in New Delhi and the Consulate General offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. Many of the students who came to Mumbai for interviews were congratulated by Consul General David J. Ranz.

…students are a big business for the US, with Indian students contributing more than $8 billion dollars a year…

Patricia Lacina, Charge d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Mumbai, presented visas to two students who plan to study abroad in the US this year. Despite the pandemic, the US Mission issued more student visas in 2021 than ever before, said Patricia Lacina. Lacina also believes that international student exchanges from India to the United States are a "cornerstone" of the US-India relationship.

At the event, the Consul General of USA was quoted as saying, “A degree from the US can take you anywhere in the world,” Ranz said. “Students are a big business for the US, with Indian students contributing more than $8 billion dollars a year…Last year we issued a record 100,000 visa applications to Indian students and might double that number in 2022 according to the numbers with us.”

According to sources, the US Embassy plans to interview more applicants for student visas this summer than they ever have before.
