Rice University Launches Campus: It’s First European Hub for Research in Paris

I In an effort to expand its global reach, Rice University recently launched its Paris Centre. The Rice University Paris Centre will be the institute’s first European hub for research. According to sources, Rice University’s Paris centre will house student initiatives, independent researchers, and worldwide conferences starting in January 2023.

Provost Reginald DesRoches, who will become Rice’s president in July commented about the launch of the new centre by saying, “Rice University’s mission statement commits us not only to path-breaking research and unsurpassed teaching, but also to the betterment of our world.”

…the Paris location offers an incredible range of opportunities, in fields ranging from art and architecture to international business and global relations and politics…

According to university officials, the new campus will function as a satellite location to give Rice more access to its European research partners. Small groups of students will enrol in one- to three-week long short courses at the centre, and faculty researchers and a select cadre of graduate students will also station themselves at the campus on a rotating basis.

In the heart of Paris's Le Marais neighbourhood, Rice University will operate from a grand townhouse dating back to the 16th century. A notary to King Louis XII constructed the structure, which was known as the Hotel de La Faye, in the early 1500s. It was designated a historic monument in 1966, and it has four levels, a courtyard, and a private garden. University sources say that the new Paris centre will have 6 classrooms that can accommodate 151 students.

Speaking on the launch, Caroline Levander, Rice’s vice president for global and digital strategy said, “For our purposes, this building is an ideal educational space conveniently situated in one of the most historically significant areas of Paris.”

The university will launch the campus with a ceremony in Paris. In a statement Rice President David Leebron said. “The Paris location offers an incredible range of opportunities, in fields ranging from art and architecture to international business and global relations and politics.”
