Sources: 32,000 African Students Benefit from Government of India’s Scholarships

A According to sources, of the 50,000 opportunities the nation promised to provide African students over a 10-year period, 32,000 African students have benefited from Indian government scholarships since 2015. Confirming the news, India’s External Affairs Minister said that the new figures, according to Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, are in addition to the thousands of other students from the continent's 19 different countries who have benefited from his government's e-VidyaBharti virtual education platform since 2019.

Speaking at the 17th CII-EXIM Bank Conclave on India-Africa Growth Partnership in Delhi last week, the minister said, "We are committed to enhancing capacity building and skill development among African youth." He further added, "In this context, you would recall that we had announced 50,000 scholarships during the India Africa Forum Summit-III in 2015, out of which more than 32,000 scholarship slots have already been utilised."

The e-VidyaBharti provides professionals and students with opportunities for undergraduate and graduate study.

During the conference, Mr. Jaishankar mentioned that the ITEC programme, a technical and economic cooperation initiative run by the external affairs ministry for the benefit of developing countries, has trained a number of students and officials from Africa. Scholarships for higher education and a "wide range of capacity building programmes, including short-term civilian and military training courses", are among its other features.

He also stated, "India has helped African countries to promote digital transformation through the setting-up of IT Centres, Science & Technology Parks, and Entrepreneurship Development Centres."

Uganda, a country in East Africa, is one of the 19 nations that have benefited from the e-VidyaBharti and has reportedly enrolled more than 300 students since 2020, according to the Indian government.

In 2020, Nigeria, the most populous nation on the continent, had about 1,525 students enrolled in various institutions, ranking it as the seventh most popular country for international students in India. According to various sources, the nation's educational institutions had an estimated 47,000 foreign international students.
