Taith Project: Wales Successfully Launches New Reciprocal Exchange Program

R Renamed as Taith, a £65 million programme that was first announced in March 2021 now supports both inbound and outbound mobility. According to sources, the first funding category will support both short-and long-term initiatives that promote physical, virtual, and blended outward and inward mobility. A second funding solicitation for initiatives involving international organisations will go live in October 2022.

Susana Galván, executive director of Taith, told the press, "This pathway one, which is the bread and butter of it, is where most of the funding is allocated and that’s for mobility of learners and staff." She also told the press that the number of applications was good across all sectors and the government is very excited about the prospect of Project Taith.

…overall, the government is hoping to see 15,000 participants from Wales join programs, and 10,000 participants to Wales, by the end of August 2026…

As Susana Galván pointed out, Taith is different from Erasmus and Turing in that it is run as a separate department of Cardiff University and is funded by the Welsh government. Along with higher education, vocational training, and educational institutions, it also provides funding for initiatives around the world in the fields of voluntary youth work and adult education.

The government expects 10,000 participants to come to Wales and 15,000 participants from Wales to join programmes by the end of August 2026. By August 2024, the government hopes to have established 50 multi-year partnerships with 40 countries.

Bangor University is one of the universities chosen for funding. Bangor University is "delighted to have received funds to support our ability to provide current and future students with opportunities for global mobility," according to a spokesperson.

Overall, the government expects 15,000 Welsh participants to join programmes and 10,000 foreign participants to visit Wales by the end of August 2026.
