UC Davis Gets $50M Donation from Lynda and Stewart Resnick for Sustainability Research

L Lynda and Stewart Resnick, co-owners of The Wonderful Company and philanthropists, have pledged a gift to the University of California, Davis. Through the grant, the school will be able to continue its long-standing commitment to addressing pressing issues in agriculture and environmental sustainability.

Thanks to the grant, the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Center for Agricultural Innovation will take shape. According to sources, $10 million of the $50 million will go toward annual competitive research grants administered by the Resnick Agricultural Innovation Research Fund.

Their contribution will also help fund UC Davis' $2 billion fundraising campaign, "Expect Greater: From UC Davis, for the World," the university's greatest philanthropic endeavour to date.

…this contribution indicates a continuous commitment to creative environmental stewardship and allows us to develop science-based solutions that may be quickly implemented while minimising the effects of climate change…

The initiative will unite specialists across UC Davis, focused on five thematic research areas. The areas include innovating creative ways to deal with agricultural byproducts, maximising water and energy efficiency, creating next-generation technologies, making crops more resilient and sustainable in the face of a rapidly changing climate, and increasing access to wholesome food.

According to Stewart Resnick, a member of the UC Davis Chancellor's Board of Advisors, the grant intends to help UC Davis' greatest scientific minds rise to the great challenge of our time: the sustainability of our planet for future generations. He further added that he was honoured to work with Lynda and Stewart Resnick on this critical project.

"This contribution indicates a continuous commitment to creative environmental stewardship and allows us to develop science-based solutions that may be quickly implemented while minimising the effects of climate change," said Gary S. May, chancellor of UC Davis.

The Resnick Center's design work will start in 2022, with construction projected to be finished by 2026.

Near the present plant sciences facility off Hutchison Drive in Davis, the new 40,000 square foot, LEED-certified, cutting-edge centre will hold classrooms, research and lab facilities, and student career and advising assistance once built.
