UGC: Students Can Now Pursue Two Full-Time Academic Programmes Simultaneously

T The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that students will now be able to pursue two full-time academic programmes simultaneously. There's a set of guidelines regarding the announcement available on the official website: www.ugc.ac.in

With single-course rule, even if a student is capable and interested in pursuing multiple disciplines, they are not able to do so because as per older UGC rules, students are allowed only one full-time course along with online/short-term/diploma courses. The new development will bring flexibility, which in turn, will help students have meaningful exchanges across different streams.

The decision has come at the right time as nowadays it' s important to be able to discuss contemporary challenges like that of climate change to making workplaces more inclusive. It goes without saying that the need of the hour is to have a young generation with expertise in multiple fields. However, it does come with its own set of problems.

Teachers will be required to design courses, something that they are not used to doing, at least not with multiple courses at one go. Teaching practices will have to change and be improvised to accommodate diverse knowledge streams — for instance, students from science background sitting for a history class may require a different kind of teaching than those already specialising in history. The UGC will have to draw up training programmes for teachers to enable them to adapt to the changing character of the classroom.

The guidelines will apply to all the programmes available across the country. Students will have the option to either go for a combination of a diploma programme and an undergraduate (UG) degree, two master’s programmes, or two bachelor's programmes. Lastly, the UGC must allow education institutions to take this up at their own pace.
