USA: Survey Finds Gen Z’s Lack of Trust in Higher Education
A A new survey measuring public confidence in higher education found that young adults' faith in American colleges and universities must be earned and not taken for granted. In a survey of adults in Generation Z, 41% said they typically trusted schools and institutions, while 35% said they typically did not.
The Cohort Z group, which is made up of people between the ages of 18 and 25, has the lowest level of confidence in higher education out of the four generations Morning Consult surveyed.

In its survey, Morning Consult interviewed 1,000 high school students between the ages of 16 and 18 and more than 11,000 U.S. adults in mid-June to determine the level of trust that Americans have in American Higher Education and to compile its inaugural list of the Most Trusted University Brands. The study supports recent public opinion research that indicated a deterioration in the popular attitude of higher education.
The author of the research, Rahul Choudaha, reacted to the poll results by saying, "This certainly signals a red light for higher education. They must work harder and more strategically to understand why Gen Z members have trust issues and how to address them. They cannot afford to be complacent. He further added, “Understanding the diverse needs of their audiences and figuring out how best they can respond to it is something we also wanted to achieve out of this report.”
Rachel Fishman, interim director of the higher education team at New America, a Washington think tank, too added her perspective to the Morning Consult study by stating that she has observed a generational divide in how colleges and universities are viewed, particularly when comparing younger generations with older ones. According to a higher education survey that New America runs every year, fewer Americans now believe that colleges and universities are benefiting the nation as a whole.
