Ukraine War: South Asian Students Fleeing Ukraine Seek Government Aid

S Students from South Asia who were studying medicine in Ukraine at the time of the conflict are pleading with their elected leaders to permit them to finish their degrees in their home nations. When they graduate, the approximately 18,000 Indian students who were forced to leave Ukraine in March will not be licensed to practice medicine in the nation because many of them are now completing their studies remotely from India.

According to sources, distance learners are unable to fulfil the in-person practical requirements set forth by the National Medical Commission of India, which regulates medical education. Despite the students' pleading, sources claim that the Indian government has stated that due to a lack of capacity, the nation's universities are unable to house the students who have returned to India.

…it appears as though we are at the NMC's mercy... they merely play with our future...

When the war started, 22-year-old Utkarsh Singh was a student at Ternopil National Medical University in Ukraine. He escaped through Romania.

He asserts that returning to Ukraine is his only option if the medical commission does not intervene, despite the Indian Embassy's warnings that doing so is dangerous. It appears as though we are at the NMC's mercy, Singh said. They merely play with our future, said Singh.

Last month, some Delhi students went on a hunger strike in an effort to persuade the government to take action, and others demonstrated in front of the NMC's offices.

Indian medical students in Ukraine are not the only ones in despair, students from Nepal to face the same issue. The third-year medical student from Nepal, Roshan Jha, 24, is enrolled at Kharkiv National Medical University in Ukraine.

Jha is continuing his education online, just like Singh, but because of this, when he earns his degree, he won't be eligible to practice medicine in Nepal.

Jha said, "We have the option to transfer to other countries, but... we cannot afford that much money. Worrying about my future and studying is the worst feeling ever.

Some nations have made it possible for returning students to continue their education there. The Irish government announced in March that Irish and Ukrainian students would be able to enrol in Irish universities. Ukrainian-born medical students are now welcome at the University of Cambridge in the UK.

However, according to Medlink Students, it has been difficult for many medical students to find new spaces.
