Universities Advise Students to Not Travel Due to Housing Shortages

D Due to a lack of housing, students have been advised against visiting specific universities in Europe. Students who are unable to find housing in locations like Glasglow and the Netherlands have received warnings from universities.

Housing shortages are causing problems in many countries. For instance, international students in Canada recently referred to the housing search as "traumatising," and people who want to study in the Netherlands have been told to avoid going to Amsterdam and Utrecht at the start of the new term if they haven't already secured housing.

…the housing situation there is crazy... I've been trying to find a spare room using housing websites... people receive so many messages that they are unable to even read them all…

Glasgow University is one of the affected universities. In a statement to the media, the university attributed the shortages to increased demand and "a significant contraction in the private rental market."

According to a statement from the university's student union, the SRC, "it now appears that over-recruitment has contributed to the creation of a similar situation," despite the SRC's efforts to persuade the university to commit to a moratorium on student numbers.

The housing shortage has already had an impact on students. A student who went to study in Iran said of her situation, "The housing situation there is crazy. I've been trying to find a spare room using housing websites. People receive so many messages that they are unable to even read them all, she claimed. I sent out hundreds of messages, but I never received a proper response, she said.
