20 Research Institutions Join Hands to Double Hispanic Doctoral Enrolment

H Hispanic-serving institutions, or HSIs, are colleges that have at least a quarter of their student bodies made up of full-time Hispanic undergraduates. This designation allows them to compete for federal grants designated for these institutions.
According to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, the number of HSIs has exploded in recent years, with 559 institutions meeting the federal threshold in the 2020-21 academic year. According to the group's findings last year, 29 colleges have received the HSI designation on average every year since 2013.

A new alliance of 20 Research Institutions aim to help address the inequities that Hispanic population faces. The group's 20 institutions are all classified as R1 by the Carnegie Classifications, indicating that they have a high level of research activity. Heather Wilson, president of the University of Texas at El Paso said, “No group is better positioned than we are to expand the pathway to opportunity,” Wilson said. “We believe we are stronger together than as individual institutions acting alone.”

Some of the participating institutions have already collaborated on issues relating to Hispanic education. They started a project in 2020-21 that was funded by a three-year, $5 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It helps train doctoral students in Latino humanities.
