CAMPUS Asia: Extends to ASEAN Countries

C CAMPUS Asia, a student exchange programme between China, Japan and South Korea will now include Southeast Asian countries, mainly Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia under a new programme called CAMPUS Asia Plus. The programme, scheduled to begin this year, will include universities in ASEAN countries. “Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, strengthening cooperation in education and people-to-people exchanges among South Korea, Japan, China and ASEAN has become much more important,” said South Korea’s Vice Minister of Education Jung Jong Chul.

ASEAN University Network (AUN), Bangkok Executive Director, Choltis Dhirathiti in a statement said that “extending CAMPUS Asia to Southeast Asia is already in the implementation plan in some subject areas. For example, we have collaboration in the field of engineering with Japanese universities and we are also discussing extending this to CAMPUS Asia Plus – though this stage is still under discussion.”

“Their intention, particularly in Japanese universities which are involved in CAMPUS Asia that I have been dealing with, is the wish to extend the success of mobility between those three countries (China, Japan and South Korea) to Southeast Asia,” he added.

CAMPUS Asia will help fund the CAMPUS Asia plus programme. For instance, the South Korean education ministry has agreed to help with KRW120 million (around US$101,000) towards operating costs for five years. In addition to that will be the taking care of accommodation and financial assistance. Similarly, Singapore has also extended help with its universities providing exchange students with accommodation. With COVID-19 pandemic still around, many countries are either canceling their courses or not allowing exchange students to enter or re-enter. Among the three original CAMPUS Asia members, Japan and China are yet to allow in foreign students.
