Discovery Education and Illumina Corporate Foundation Partner for New Virtual Field Trip
G Genomics: Decoding the Language of Life Virtual Field Trip is a new virtual experience created by Discovery Education and The Illumina Corporate Foundation to introduce students in grades 6 through 12 to the power of DNA. This virtual field trip is a part of DNA Decoded, a programme created to encourage students to discover the potential of genomics through ready-to-use, standards-aligned lessons and activities. It is presented by the Illumina Corporate Foundation and Discovery Education.
This virtual learning experience, which will debut on September 15 at 1 PM ET and be accessible on demand, transports students to the Illumina laboratories in San Diego, California, where they can interact with real-world experts who are using the genome's power to enhance lives and promote the preservation of the planet's natural resources. Students will examine the cutting-edge genome sequencing technology that is being used to revolutionise a variety of fields, including medicine, agriculture, sustainability, and much more during the Genomics: Decoding the Language of Life virtual field trip.
…at Illumina, we are committed to expanding future opportunities for the next generation by putting genomics into practise and to fostering opportunities for students in the world of genetic science…
The head of corporate social responsibility, Sharon Vidal, said that DNA not only has the power to change lives but can also encourage students to pursue careers in STEM. "At Illumina, we are committed to expanding future opportunities for the next generation by putting genomics into practice and to fostering opportunities for students in the world of genetic science."
Teachers are given resources and exercises for before, during, and after the virtual field trip in an accompanying educator guide and conversation starter packet. The DNA Decoded resources for middle and high school teachers are built upon by the Genomics: Decoding the Language of Life Virtual Field Trip. To assist students in discovering the power of DNA, educators can find digital lesson plans, classroom activities, career guides, and more.
"Seeing genomics in action is incredibly powerful for students because we know that DNA is the basis of life. According to Amy Nakamoto, general manager of social impact at Discovery Education, "This new virtual field trip takes students behind-the-scenes to meet diverse STEM leaders transforming our world one nucleotide at a time while also providing educators engaging STEM resources to connect the classroom to real world science.
