IIT Guwahati and Assam Government: To Collaborate for Regional Development

A As a major step towards training young minds under the guidance of seasoned professionals, to develop research and technical guidance in order to use the abundant natural resources, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati and Assam Government Officials have announced a collaboration which is expected to do wonders for the development of the region.

The announcement was made in the presence of officials from various departments like Mines and Minerals, Industry, Commerce, Public Enterprises, and Transport (includes inland waterways). It was led by Dr. K. K. Dwivedi, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, and IIT Guwahati Director TG Sitharam.

Professor TG Sitharam, Director IIT Guwahati, said, “As per the request of the State Government, IIT Guwahati will be very glad to contribute mainly in the areas focusing in the exploration of Mines and Minerals, Commerce and Entrepreneurship Development, Involvement of Drones in various sectors, Transport Sector - Inland Water Transport, Water Buses, Road Safety, aspects related to Skill Development in multiple upcoming sectors and establishing various Centres of Excellence & state of the art laboratories at the institute.”

IIT Guwahati will also give a boost to research on the use of tea in sectors like Medicine, Health and Wellness. The institute added, “Efforts to highlight the importance of various types of tea and their rich ingredients will be carried out along with the state officials.”

A proposal was also made to set up Assam Skill University which will be under the purview of the engineering department. The department will be incharge of a research and development facility, and will look after the multiple aspects of inland water transport which includes marine engine design, designing of vessels, and its repairing and servicing hub.
